Descripción - Prof. Dr. K. V. DOMINIC (b. 1956), English poet, critic, editor and short story writer is a retired professor of the PG & Research Department of English, Newman College, Thodupuzha, Kerala, India - 685585. He was born on 13 February 1956 at Kalady, a holy place in Kerala where Adi Sankara, the philosopher who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta was born. He has authored/edited 38 books including two short story collections and ten books of poems—six in English and one each translation in French, Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati. He is the Secretary of Guild of Indian English Writers, Editors and Critics (GIEWEC) and Editor of two international refereed biannual journals--Writers Editors Critics (WEC) and International Journal on Multicultural Literature (IJML). He was the former Associate Professor of the PG and Research Department of English, Newman College, Thodupuzha, Kerala, India. Four books on his poetry have recently come out from the USA with the objective of including his poems in the university syllabus of South Asian Studies in UK, USA, Canada and Australia. PhD researches are in progress on his poetry. Let me at the outset of this brief preface explain why I have taken such an attempt at editing and getting published an anthology in Canadian Literature. While Canadian Literature is very vibrant and competent like British, American and Indian English Literatures, and has been prescribed for study in several universities in India, there have not been sufficient study materials, especially critical materials available. Though much study has been going on in Canadian Literature by scholars in India, and papers have been published in scholarly journals, edited books are found few in number. Thus my intention is to fill the gap a little by my humble effort. Canadian history begins with the inhabitance of aboriginal peoples for thousands of years. The present Canada has evolved from a group of French and British colonies into a bilingual, multicultural federation. The French settlers inhabited the country in the 17th century. They were conquered by the Great Britain in 1763. The present constitution of Canada evolved in 1867. In 1931 the Statute of Westminster gave the Canadian dominions the opportunity for almost complete legislative independence from the Parliament of the United Kingdom and they became totally free. Thus the Statute of Westminster has been called Canada’s declaration of independence. Canada presently consists of ten provinces and three territories.Although Canadian literature enjoys an international prestige today, as a whole it developed slowly. It started in the 17th century and achieved its distinctive character only after Canada got independence from Great Britain in 1867. Canadian literature, like the literature of every country, is influenced by its socio-political contexts. The Canadian writers have been greatly influenced both geographically and historically and they produced a variety of genres. By Prime Minister Trudeau's "Announcement of Implementation of Policy of Multiculturalism within Bilingual Framework" in 1971, Canada became a treasure house for readers and writers. Thus Canadian literature has been strongly influenced by international immigration, particularly in recent decades. The literature of Canada, both English and French, reflects the Canadian perspective on Nature, frontier life, and the position of Canada in the world. Canada's ethnic and cultural diversity are reflected in its literature, and most of the prominent writers focus on ethnic life. The common traits found in Canadian literature include: failure as a theme, humour, mild Anti-Americanism, multiculturalism, Nature, satire and irony, self-deprecation, self-evaluation, search for self-identity, Southern Ontario Gothic (Protestant mentality of Southern Ontario), the underdog hero, and urban versus rural. There are twenty three critical articles in this anthology including an interview.
